Barcelona, Spain, 2015

There is magic out there, I am sure of it, for I have seen it. You see, we go through life, as children, constantly learning new things, always improving, never stopping to believe there is a boogiemen out there or there is something far greater out there than what we are. Well, as we get older and older the more we forget that we are just children constantly evolving and growing, constantly becoming something else. We tend to, sometimes, loose track of the fact that this planet is amazing, it is full of unbelievable surprises, and there is something out there which makes this place incomparable to anything else that I can possibly imagine. Does that make any sense?! Thought so! Great.

On my recent trip to Spain I have experienced something I have not experienced in a very long time: I was amazed by light. I went to a building, constructed for the common church of Spain by a person who had believed. Believed both to the words this particular church had been preaching but also believed that he can be greater than great (at just 31). This person wanted pure perfection more than he wanted anything else. He was concerned with how the light would travel through the windows at different times of the day and how sound would reflect off the walls for the different instruments and for the different voices. His concern, his dedication, his desire for amazing greatness, and his constant drive to improve and to astonish people had achieved the greatest thing it could have possible accomplished for me—it had amazed me. Sadly he felt phenomena do so, nowadays.

As you read my notes of my travels to Barcelona and Madrid you might notice me being a little over-the-edge romantic. This is because I feel a little bit so. I have discovered something more there that made me think, and made me fill-up about 50 pages of my travel journal with scribbles. I feel a little more alive than I had felt in a while. I needed this trip, apparently, to realize something for myself. I hope you will enjoy reading the specifics.

So, what’s the first thing I do, right off the jet?  In Barcelona?  Well, Apple store, of course, what else?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-1

Immediately, the difference of this place from the others I visit is clearly visible.  How?  Well, look at who is mixed in with the pigeons…  See it?  See the PARROTS?  Yeah, parrots.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-2

Even the door of my hostel has that old European charm to it.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-3

This is a typical site now, at least in Philly, with all the rent-a-bike… But this was not so typical for us just a little while ago.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-4

Gorgeous here, don’t you agree?  And the main street, just like Philly, has skateboarders practicing their style.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-5

I’m in Europe and yet this looks like home, doesn’t it?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-6

Same as the grandmas here… Although, I think the culture here is closer to my own heart—grannies chill and gossip all day long.  I think in US you are more likely to see something like this at a nursing home, not on the street, don’t you think?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-7

This was in March, 2015…  Now Philly looks like this, too; except our color choice is blue and the technology seems to be more… technological… here in Philly.  The basic concept, though, is the same—grad a bike and go.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-8

And, of course, we got the Starbucks right there, too.  So typical.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-9

Looks like an add-on balcony?  Hmm… Didn’t really realize that these are allowed…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-10

Gorgeous day, right?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-11

And the doors… Oh, my, oh my.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-12

I don’t know if this is “professional” [as in “paid-for”] or just graffiti, but this is definitely much better work than what I see anywhere in Philly, or anywhere in the US for that matter.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-13

Somehow they even have bike lanes in the walking section of the road.  This tells me that the bike traffic must be enormous over here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-14

See?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-15

Oh, yeah, I’ve been meaning to check out this movie for a while now.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-16

Quite pretty here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-17

And even the seemingly-homeless people have nice white socks.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-18

Oh, awesome!  This bike is advertising the new camera I got—the HTC Re.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-19

2015-Spain-Barcelona-20

The old Mini Coopers?  I think so!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-21

I love these freaking cars!  Love them enough to own one myself.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-22

And I love how clean just about everything looks.  I suppose some kind of regulations are in place since everything looks spotless here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-23

And I do mean everything!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-24

2015-Spain-Barcelona-25

Russians… Pointing at the fucking shit over on that fucking thing there, see.  Yeah, that’s how we talk amongst each other.  Lovely, right?  I like the impressionist pattern on the tree, too—looks as if it was painted-in.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-26

2015-Spain-Barcelona-27

2015-Spain-Barcelona-28

I can see myself living here, for sure.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-29

Going to the stadium here every-so-often.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-30

Or just hanging out in the square here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-31

Right by the construction (which, by the way, also looks ultra-clean).

2015-Spain-Barcelona-32

And the oranges, apparently, are in-season.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-33

2015-Spain-Barcelona-34

Heading towards the Art Museum here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-35

Nice view there, right?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-36

2015-Spain-Barcelona-37

2015-Spain-Barcelona-38

2015-Spain-Barcelona-39

As the sun is starting to set I happen to catch a few views here’n’there.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-40

I don’t know if it’s me or this city but everything looks so orderly…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-41

2015-Spain-Barcelona-42

Even the old and fucked up pavement looks great.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-43

2015-Spain-Barcelona-44

So do the small side streets.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-45

2015-Spain-Barcelona-46

Kids here.  KIDS!  And it’s so dang clean.  How!?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-47

2015-Spain-Barcelona-48

2015-Spain-Barcelona-49

2015-Spain-Barcelona-50

2015-Spain-Barcelona-51

Oh, yeah, I do notice quite a few dogs without a leash.  Dang, I want a dog!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-52

2015-Spain-Barcelona-53

Oh, yeah, I am in Catalonia.  It’s definitely not Spain.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-54

Sure looks like it though.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-55

Complete with the old train stations, undergoing renovations.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-56

2015-Spain-Barcelona-57

2015-Spain-Barcelona-58

This is a fucking dumpster.  DUMPSTER, you hear me?!  See how clean this place is?  Seriously, I think they just cleaned everything up before I got here.  That must be it!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-59

This is cool, I suppose.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-60

Most side streets are like this, just FYI.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-61

2015-Spain-Barcelona-62

2015-Spain-Barcelona-63

Just a playground.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-64

Just a guy with a bunch of girls piled up on him.  Oh-so-pissy!  Hahaha

2015-Spain-Barcelona-65

Public library.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-66

See the prices here?  A beer for a dollar.  Excuse me, for a Euro, but the exchange rate is almost 1:1.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-67

Huh?  Russian-owned store in a resort town that doesn’t have Matryoshkas?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-68

2015-Spain-Barcelona-69

2015-Spain-Barcelona-70

I do see plenty of small local niceness.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-71

Look at the zoom.  Dope, huh?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-72

Or this dude?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-73

2015-Spain-Barcelona-74

2015-Spain-Barcelona-75

Nice highlights, girl.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-76

Zara…  This is a private joke, sorry.  I’m leaving this image here only for those very few of you who are in-the-know.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-77

And the eyeball-covered building… OK, why not?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-78

2015-Spain-Barcelona-79

It is definitely absolutely gorgeous here at night.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-80

2015-Spain-Barcelona-81

Still night, just better camera setting.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-82

Nice ashtrays.  Funny to type this as I don’t really smoke cigarettes anymore.  I do miss them a little.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-83

2015-Spain-Barcelona-84

Don’t really know any of these DJs.  Perhaps I am getting older and the parties are evolving beyond me.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-85

Anyway I’m more into architecture, anyway.  Like the naked girl on a horse with a ship…  Wait, what?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-86

2015-Spain-Barcelona-87

2015-Spain-Barcelona-88

2015-Spain-Barcelona-89

2015-Spain-Barcelona-90

Street fair.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-91

Very cool.  These are all bolted to the ground, by the way.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-92

Ice-cream here is pretty interesting.  They even have the Redbull flavor.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-93

2015-Spain-Barcelona-94

Cops are the same as everywhere else.  This is good—they are easy to recognize.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-95

2015-Spain-Barcelona-96

Zorro?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-97

2015-Spain-Barcelona-98

The Sex Museum.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-99

Just look at how intricate the balconies are and the tile work on the building…  I wish I saw more of this in Philly.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-100

But the portrait tourist-traps are here all-the-same.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-101

As is the Istanbul.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-102

As are the “statues”.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-103

2015-Spain-Barcelona-105

Beach side of the town.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-106

Complete with the Columbus statue.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-107

And, of course, fancy hotels.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-108

Streets are the same, though.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-109

And the doors.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-110

2015-Spain-Barcelona-111

And the streets.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-112

2015-Spain-Barcelona-113

I totally would not mind living here like this.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-114

2015-Spain-Barcelona-115

Oh, what a great idea!  Cheap and very great-looking.  Please take this up, Amazon, or somebody.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-116

Superb grafitti.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-117

Not so much here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-118

2015-Spain-Barcelona-119

Even old buildings under renovation look clean.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-121

2015-Spain-Barcelona-122

Ah, oranges!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-123

2015-Spain-Barcelona-124

And the steps towards the Art Museum, too.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-125

And the see-through sculptures, too.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-126

2015-Spain-Barcelona-127

Nice city view, right?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-129

2015-Spain-Barcelona-130

Sure is grander than the Philly Art Museum, right?  But the inside of the building is actually smaller.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-132

2015-Spain-Barcelona-133

2015-Spain-Barcelona-134

2015-Spain-Barcelona-135

2015-Spain-Barcelona-137

Shut up, prepare your ticket, and no helmets?!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-138

2015-Spain-Barcelona-139

Ah, this…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-140

2015-Spain-Barcelona-141

2015-Spain-Barcelona-142

Gaudi.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-143

Not Gaudi but still cool.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-144

Haha!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-145

Anti-capitalism drawings look pretty funny to my eye nowadays.  Wonder how people felt back then.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-146

2015-Spain-Barcelona-147

2015-Spain-Barcelona-148

2015-Spain-Barcelona-149

2015-Spain-Barcelona-150

Rain?  No matter!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-151

2015-Spain-Barcelona-152

2015-Spain-Barcelona-154

The sun is the best right after the rain, don’t you think?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-155

2015-Spain-Barcelona-156

2015-Spain-Barcelona-157

2015-Spain-Barcelona-158

2015-Spain-Barcelona-160

Some kind of a thing?  Stick your sticker ticket here?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-161

2015-Spain-Barcelona-162

Hahahaha!  Anti-Putin posts on a wall at the Barcelona Art Museum…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-163

Ohkay…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-164

2015-Spain-Barcelona-165

2015-Spain-Barcelona-168

THESE!!  Oh-so-huge and oh-so-yummy!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-169

And the perfect way to transport water cooler and a fridge, right?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-170

2015-Spain-Barcelona-172

2015-Spain-Barcelona-173

Library newspaper reading section.  I don’t see these so often anymore in the States.  Would be nice…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-175

The football (soccer) stadium.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-176

2015-Spain-Barcelona-177

This is an absolutely fabulous way to decorate a restaurant.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-183

And this is an equally fabulous idea to setup a bench.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-184

2015-Spain-Barcelona-185

Bikes…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-187

Castle of some sort is not too bad either.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-190

So are the gardens.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-191

2015-Spain-Barcelona-192

2015-Spain-Barcelona-194

And even the typical crap salesmen fit right in nicely.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-195

As do the bubble makers.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-196

And the hipsters, chillin’ by the palm trees.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-197

2015-Spain-Barcelona-198

And whatever the fuck this is… Fits right in, too.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-199

Nice here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-200

Chill.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-201

2015-Spain-Barcelona-202

I bet when these are in bloom it’s freaking gorgeous here!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-203

Not like it’s not gorgeous as-is.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-204

2015-Spain-Barcelona-206

2015-Spain-Barcelona-208

Of course, there are the love locks.  Sigh.  I need to hang one of these one day, too.  I suppose I need to buy one, right?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-209

2015-Spain-Barcelona-210

2015-Spain-Barcelona-211

2015-Spain-Barcelona-212

2015-Spain-Barcelona-213

I like this idea of city maps on the ground.  It’s becoming more and more frequent in the places I visit.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-214

So are the dancing dolls, but I suppose those have been around for quite some time.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-215

2015-Spain-Barcelona-216

2015-Spain-Barcelona-217

This is definitely a lovely city where I can spend more time than a few days, just relaxing and walking around.  I need to come back here with more time in my pocket than a few days.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-218

I suppose I could spend a month just studying different kinds of balconies here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-219

Or the different street lighting techniques.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-220

Or the statues in tribute to Don Juan, the famous lover.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-221

Or more balconies.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-222

2015-Spain-Barcelona-223

2015-Spain-Barcelona-224

2015-Spain-Barcelona-225

2015-Spain-Barcelona-226

See what I mean?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-227

Architecture is flabbergasting over here!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-228

2015-Spain-Barcelona-229

As are the window reflections.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-230

And the doors… the doors are to die for!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-231

2015-Spain-Barcelona-232

Looking at these pics I now wish to go back with a tripod and retake all of them and then take some more.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-234

2015-Spain-Barcelona-235

You see what I mean about the doors?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-237

And the alleyways.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-240

2015-Spain-Barcelona-241

2015-Spain-Barcelona-242

2015-Spain-Barcelona-243

Even the newer buildings are great-looking.  I think US has something to learn from the architects here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-244

2015-Spain-Barcelona-245

No, I just had to!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-247

Right before getting a biscuit.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-248

With nice wall-art.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-249

2015-Spain-Barcelona-250

2015-Spain-Barcelona-251

2015-Spain-Barcelona-252

2015-Spain-Barcelona-253

2015-Spain-Barcelona-254

Nice, right?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-255

And so is the design of just about every coffee shop here.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-256

Or a random find—a mammoth museum…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-257

2015-Spain-Barcelona-258

2015-Spain-Barcelona-259

2015-Spain-Barcelona-260

Wasn’t this one of the scenes in one of the Lord of the Rings movies?  Could have been…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-261

2015-Spain-Barcelona-262

2015-Spain-Barcelona-263

2015-Spain-Barcelona-264

So much history here…  Just think how many knights stood here in full armor [almost typed fool armour] stood here?!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-265

2015-Spain-Barcelona-266

2015-Spain-Barcelona-267

Talk about love fluctuations…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-268

2015-Spain-Barcelona-269

2015-Spain-Barcelona-270

2015-Spain-Barcelona-271

2015-Spain-Barcelona-272

Nice here at night.  Next time I will sleep in later and spend more time here at night, for sure.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-273

2015-Spain-Barcelona-274

2015-Spain-Barcelona-275

Check out more night markets.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-276

And look for girls who own entirely too much red.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-277

2015-Spain-Barcelona-278

2015-Spain-Barcelona-279

2015-Spain-Barcelona-280

2015-Spain-Barcelona-281

Then finish the night off at the beach.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-283

Right by Lolita.  Ah, what a great book!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-285

Don’t worry, bike happy!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-286

Not like you will have any trouble finding a place to park your bike.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-287

2015-Spain-Barcelona-288

2015-Spain-Barcelona-289

2015-Spain-Barcelona-290

2015-Spain-Barcelona-291

2015-Spain-Barcelona-294

2015-Spain-Barcelona-295

2015-Spain-Barcelona-297

2015-Spain-Barcelona-298

2015-Spain-Barcelona-300

2015-Spain-Barcelona-301

2015-Spain-Barcelona-302

2015-Spain-Barcelona-303

2015-Spain-Barcelona-304

2015-Spain-Barcelona-305

2015-Spain-Barcelona-306

2015-Spain-Barcelona-307

2015-Spain-Barcelona-308

2015-Spain-Barcelona-309

2015-Spain-Barcelona-310

Amazing place, right?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-311

And the food here is right up my alley—MEAT!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-313

Restaurants are gorgeously designed, too.  I think the huge flow of tourists supports these places very nicely.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-316

2015-Spain-Barcelona-317

2015-Spain-Barcelona-318

See the moon?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-319

2015-Spain-Barcelona-320

Technically, this is a door, I think.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-321

2015-Spain-Barcelona-322

2015-Spain-Barcelona-323

Communist propaganda here is all over the place.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-324

2015-Spain-Barcelona-325

2015-Spain-Barcelona-326

And, occasionally I find these amazing pieces of history.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-327

Homeless people?  I guess…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-338

These are real… For-real real.  True story!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-339

2015-Spain-Barcelona-340

2015-Spain-Barcelona-341

This is like a back alley.  So clean!  So chill!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-342

2015-Spain-Barcelona-343

2015-Spain-Barcelona-344

2015-Spain-Barcelona-345

2015-Spain-Barcelona-346

2015-Spain-Barcelona-347

OMG!  There she is!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-348

I can hardly wait…  This is supposed to be some kind of a different experience…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-350

2015-Spain-Barcelona-351

2015-Spain-Barcelona-352

Holy crap, there is so much to see!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-353

2015-Spain-Barcelona-354

2015-Spain-Barcelona-356

2015-Spain-Barcelona-358

2015-Spain-Barcelona-360

2015-Spain-Barcelona-364

Oh my gosh!  I have rarely been as amazed as I am standing in this cathedral.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-365

2015-Spain-Barcelona-366

2015-Spain-Barcelona-367

2015-Spain-Barcelona-369

2015-Spain-Barcelona-370

2015-Spain-Barcelona-371

2015-Spain-Barcelona-372

2015-Spain-Barcelona-375

2015-Spain-Barcelona-378

2015-Spain-Barcelona-379

2015-Spain-Barcelona-380

The light…  These photos do not do it any justice!  The light is just absolutely out of this world!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-381

2015-Spain-Barcelona-382

2015-Spain-Barcelona-383

2015-Spain-Barcelona-384

2015-Spain-Barcelona-385

2015-Spain-Barcelona-386

2015-Spain-Barcelona-387

2015-Spain-Barcelona-388

Ha!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-390

Russians are all over the place, huh?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-392

And the views from the top are something else entirely!

2015-Spain-Barcelona-393

2015-Spain-Barcelona-394

2015-Spain-Barcelona-395

The elevator shaft.

2015-Spain-Barcelona-396

2015-Spain-Barcelona-397

2015-Spain-Barcelona-398

2015-Spain-Barcelona-401

2015-Spain-Barcelona-402

2015-Spain-Barcelona-403

The level of detail…

2015-Spain-Barcelona-404

2015-Spain-Barcelona-406

2015-Spain-Barcelona-408

2015-Spain-Barcelona-410

WOW!

Heck yeah!  No inline skating allowed!  If we are not allowed somewhere that basically means that we are recognized as an entity.  I like that.  US still rarely posts anti-inline-skating signs.

Pretty awesome giant mirror ceiling.

Where am I flying to, next?

2015-Spain-Barcelona-477
