No, I cannot say I love Hawaii. It’s part of the continental USA and it’s a little bit boring. Having said that… HAWAII!!! This is a super-welcome break from the norm and a superb trip. I’ve been here some years ago. It’s actually been so long ago… I was a very different person back then… It was before the nightclubs [that I promoted, not wasted money in], before the decision to go to grad school and move to Philly, before… gosh, the trees were waaaaay taller back then :-). Anyway, this time I visited the Big Island. As usual, I had very little time so I had to snap as many photos as I can as fast as I can so I can pretend that I was there for a month and with nothing to do, no conference work, no meetings, etc.
I downloaded a map, noted all the best snorkeling places, read about everything I’m supposed to visit, packed the bags and went.
Aaaaaand off we go :-) Peace out, Philly.
Found me a store. A whole store full of Hello Kitty stuff :-).
The fuck is this? Someone please tell me.
I love this photo. At first I thought it was some strange halo or some kind of a high-altitude effect of some sort… Nah, just a reflection of my camera in the window, nothing special :-).
Remember the good ‘ol days when you had to stare at a seat in front of you? Well, I have my laptop now, any my iPad, and my Kindle, … oh, and this monitor playing movies and such for me. Nice!
Here comes LAX.
Interesting design for a sig butt can. Haven’t seen one like this before, I don’t think.
Naturally, I am very excited about the next flight, another god-knows-how-many-hours before I can relax and stop using hydrating cream. Damn this airplane air! Put a freking humidifier in there, please!
Ah, finally! I arrived. Well, I looked at this and decided to start taking photos of my “offices” on this island. Anytime I look at something and think about my office I’ll snap a photo. YAY!
Here is office numero uno.
I got the cheaper room, without a view… I wonder what the good rooms look like :-)
Yawn. Good morning, sunshine :-).
I went for a run and apparently this golf thing doesn’t start here til 8am so you can run all you want all over the golf course. Until 8 am that is.
Love it here. Sure better than the view back at home, right?
Oh, yeah, the daylight view from my window. Had it not been for the fucking neighbors upstairs complaining about my smoking this place would have been heaven. Well, more heavener than this, is that’s possible.
My office #2. Too bad I lost this map on the last day. I really wanted to scan this map. I got it at the airport—tore it out of some magazine—and walked with this little map all over the place until the last day, marking where I’ve been and where I’m heading. I so wish I still had it.
Hawaii… Sterile-clean volcanic island. All manicured and pedicured.
Warnings about ex-miliraty base presence here everywhere. Yeah, I get it, I can find unexploded shit here. Well, let’s go look for it then, shall we?!
Lovely, I’m telling ya!
Ah… I remember now why I love Hawaii! Just look at the water!
Waaaait for it… I feel that office feeling coming on…
But first I’ll take a walk around. Not many people here. All the beaches I’ve visited on this island (well, most of them) need to be driven to so there are less tourists :-).
That’s a coffee, I swear!
Ah, here we go! Office #3 :-) See, everything neatly placed in the appropriate location. Paperless office I got going on here. Inbox zero and all. True story.
Ah, just an iPhone photo. Nothing to see here, move along :).
Two-step. This is one of the best beaches on the island. Actually, I think this is THE best one. At least of the ones I have been to.
And one more office. What was this, number 4? I’m moving offices and maintaining paperlessness quite well, don’t you think so?
Ah, I had to. This whole #selfie thing is catching up with me. I did read something about neurological disorders linked to men with too many selfies… Yeah… I think so too. ;-)
Black sand is just that. Nothing to see here.
A quick game of … something … why not?
Found me a buddy.
This dude. He’s chill.
Office number… I forget.
Very cool bay, the Overlook or something like that, at the tip of the island.
Believe it or not, but apparently the movie Predator was shot here. Just not sure which specific one.
The walk down it steep though.
Aha. True story.
But beautiful once you make it all the way down.
This is, apparently, where locals hang at night. They have all these ropes and fireplaces setup and temporary camps and such. Very nice place. Which of the Predator movies does this remind you of?
Wait a second, I think I remember this scene… Or do I?
Locals bury their dogs here, by the way. Saw a few of these.
These were laughing at my camera [HTC Re], calling it the inhaler. LOL
Beautiful ride back!
What’s the number of the office here? I’d like to complain about the internet reception quality, please. Oh, and it’s too sunny—I have to wear sunglasses in my office.
See what I mean?
Back at the Two Step, I must like this place (I’ve been there four times in total during this trip).
The boat which will take me to see the Manta Ray.
So, you are supposed to see those things at night, the Manta Rays. The sun is setting over the ocean. I will go to serve in the Navy in my next life.
Might as well not catch a BIG fish, right?
The Manta photos are all the way on the bottom. I took those off the videos. So, I’m back at the hotel and I stole glowsticks somewhere. Of course I had to find glowsticks, right?!
Driving over to the rainy side of the island.
Aways rains there! Maybe not always but the whole time I was on the island one side was raining and one side was not.
Oh, made it to the volcano. Honestly, I was expecting more…
Aha! Here are the tourists.
HOLY SHIT IT’S A FUCKING VOLCANO! sigh
Interesting flora around it though.
But, fuck, I mean… what’s there to see? This is like the main attraction of the island… The fuck?!
Here, the flowers around me are far more interesting than that stupid volcano…
Oh my gosh! There’s a hole with steam coming out! No fucking way! Seriously, WOW! Shit, I live in Philly… We got this shit on every street corner. No, I’m not kidding.
And people throw money in there and all… Tourists… Go to the beach! Snorkel! Oh… wait a second… Greg, you’re here as well. OK, I’ll calm down then :-)
There’s even a guide to tell you about the steam coming from the ground…
Well, the lava tube was cool. Yes, honestly.
Lava made this giant hole.
Driving back through nothing but volcanic rock. It’s pretty awesome to see the nature thriving here.
Steamy road :)
See, I’m getting closer to the other side of the island and immediately it’s sunny.
There was Windows with this kind of a backdrop, right?
Took some night photos but didn’t have the right equipment with me. Lovely to see the stars. Just sit on the beach with a bottle of beer and a camera. Lovely!
Ah, my little friend! Stole a piece of sandwich right from me!
This is a car mechanic. But no, no car trouble, just stopped in for some coffee next door.
And I’m at the Captain Cook’s memorial. Just have to walk a few miles down the volcanic rock covered in hay… In flip-flops :-).
Ah, I miss this already.
Here’s the Captain! Perhaps that’s somehow bad… but everyone uses this plaque as a chair to get in/out of the water. Very nicely placed. Perfect height and all… Sorry, bro!
Completely different kind of tourists here. Much more better.
Ah the baby Clinton memorial!!
Yeah I snorkeled there! I dragged all the gear for two+ miles not for nothing! :-)
And, back to Two Step. I positively love this place.
With the ropes rotting in the water.
With the trees and all.
I love this one! Windows should make this their backdrop next (make the icon text completely unreadable, why not?).
Found them! I knew there were supposed to be turtles there! :-)
Tourists… Oh, wait…
Sorry, I liked your butts better.
My fav dude!
And one more friend of mine. Check out his pattern. Cool, huh?
Hard to see the rainbow here. In real life this was the hugest rainbow I have ever seen. Stunning. Absolutely flabbergastingly orgasmic!
Way to close half a bridge, yo!
Of course I can’t go anywhere on this side of the island since it’s constantly fucking raining! Gosh! Sigh
And I’m driving into the sunny side. Told’ja!
By the way, driving here is fantastic!
T-5 hours. I better get a few beers and watch the sun set.
Here we go. These are the pics off the GoPro. I’ll post the video later once I edit it. So-far I have almost a terabyte of videos… Crazy how much video you can capture on a GoPro without even noticing it…
Here’s another selfie :-).
Nothing special. I just ran to the beach, put flappers on and dived. I’m not waiting for superb time of the day… This is what Hawaiians get all day long, day-in-day-out.
Yeah, I did!
Here’s the Manta Ray. It’s actually a HUGE fish and apparently the most amazing experience of a lifetime. I didn’t feel all-that flabbergasted but it was, indeed, pretty cool :-).
So, here I am. Back in the freezing Philly, writing about this trip. Amazing time. I have nothing more to say than… If you go to Hawaii, or *when* you do, try to visit more than one island.
p.s. I’ll post the videos soon. Might take me a bit of time to edit those…
